Colección Digital: Fotografía Abstracta II

No me es fácil decir lo que pienso o siento, pero cuando tomo estas fotos y las miro me doy cuenta de que dicen exactamente lo que buscaba expresar. Algunas son melancólicas, otras solitarias. Unas más son poderosas o alegres. Todas son una expresión de un sentimiento que proviene de mí y que transmito a la película.

Las llamo Abstractas II porque son diferentes de las abstractas clásicas (que yo llamo Abstractas I) ya que no es posible ver estas imágenes a simple vista -no importa cuánto te acerques o te alejes, cuándo entrecierres los ojos o enmarques la escena-. No son "retratos" de un instante de la realidad sino transformo ese instante usando la cámara como si fuera un pincel o un cincel. Aunque controlo muchas de las variables, hay un elemento incontrolable que siempre me sorprende. “Pinto con luz” usando reflejos y refracciones y acercando telas de colores. Sólo puedo tomar estas fotos en mi cocina (gracias a la posición de su ventana) unas 12 semanas al año durante un período de 90 minutos si hay un sol brillante y cielo sin nubes.

Claro, como son fotografías y la fotografía retrata algo -a una persona, un paisaje, un pepino-, lo primero que me preguntan es "¿que es?", pero nunca respondo porque quiero que hablen con su propia voz, que sean vistas como imágenes por sí mismas.

Las imágenes en esta colección fueron tomadas con una Nikon D80 de 10.1 megapixeles y un lente Nikon.

Cada imagen consta de una serie de 10 impresiones en formato 20 x 24'' (50 x 60 cm.) y 10 impresiones en formato 100 x 83 cm., impresas profesionalmente, en papel metálico, por el mejor laboratorio fotográfico de México.

No le he puesto nombre a las imágenes -a diferencia de las fotos que he expuesto físicamente-, pero lo haré cada vez que alguien solicite la primera de la serie.

Collection: Film · Abstract II

I find it very difficult to say what I think or feel, but when I take these photographs and look at them I realize they say exactly what I meant. Some are melancholic, some are lonely. Others are powerful or happy or light. But they all express a feeling of mine that I transfer to the film.

I call them Abstract II because they're different from "classical" abstract photographies (what I call Abstract I) since you can’t see these images at first glance, regardless of how close or far you go or how you frame the scene. These are not portraits of an instant of reality but I transform that instant using the camera as if it were a brush or a chasel. Although I control many of the variables, there’s an uncontrolable element —random chance if you will— that always surprises me. I “paint with light” using reflections and refraction and setting colourful pieces of cloth nearby. I can only take them in my kitchen (thanks to the position of its window) during a period of about 12 weeks a year, if the day is sunny and cloudless.

Of course, because these are photographs and photography portrays something -a person, a landscape, a cucumber-, the first question I get is "what is it?" but I never say because I want them to be seen as images by themselves, to speak by themselves.

The images in this collection were taken with a Nikon D80, 10.1 megapixels, and a Nikon lens.

Every image comes in a series of 10 prints in 20 x 24" format, and 10 prints in 39 x 32" (100 x 83 cm) format, professionally printed by the best photo lab in México.

I haven’t named these images —unlike the ones I’ve exhibited—, but I will everytime someone orders the first in the series.
